Alan DB Smith started flying at 17 as a Flight Engineer with 206 Sqn in
1942. After the war he was at the Transport Command Development Unit at
Brize Norton during 1947/48, during which time he flew in the Berlin
Airlift, subsequently becoming the founding Chairman of the British
Berlin Airlift Association. In the 1950s, he received a Commission and
was trained as a pilot, flying Valettas in the Borneo compaign before
returning to the UK and transitioning via the Meteor to fly the
Cnaberra bomber. After leaving the RAF, he flew with various UK
airlines, amassing more than 5,000 hours of Viscount time.
